Is your adult child entitled, defiant, or irresponsible—or is something else contributing to the behavior you are seeing?

This educational self-assessment helps parents look beyond labels such as lazy, entitled, disrespectful, immature, or defiant and examine the actual behaviors underneath them. You’ll explore how avoidance, missing life skills, fear of failure, mental health concerns, family patterns, unclear expectations, parental overfunctioning, and genuine resistance to responsibility can sometimes look similar from the outside.

Based on concepts explored in They’re Home… Now What? — Parenting After College, this guide helps parents distinguish between an adult child who cannot currently manage something, someone who has not yet learned how, and someone who may be capable but unwilling to take greater responsibility. It also examines how parents may unintentionally become part of the pattern by repeatedly stepping in or continuing responsibilities their adult child needs an opportunity to practice.

Includes education, real-life examples, a self-assessment with score interpretation, practical exercises, and reflection questions to help you better understand your adult child’s behavior, reduce assumptions, and identify where support, clearer expectations, skill-building, or greater adult responsibility may be needed.
