How can a parent and adult child experience the same family, conversation, or event so differently?

This educational self-assessment helps parents explore what happens when disagreements become less about the current problem and more about whose version of the past or relationship is correct. You’ll look at the difference between facts and interpretations, intent and impact, emotional experience and assumptions, as well as how old family roles, defensiveness, and words like “always” and “never” can keep the same arguments going.

Based on concepts explored in They’re Home… Now What? — Parenting After College, this guide helps parents understand that acknowledging an adult child’s experience does not require agreeing with every interpretation, while also recognizing that good intentions do not automatically erase impact. It focuses on moving away from arguments about motives and toward the specific behaviors and patterns that can actually be addressed.

Includes education, real-life examples, a self-assessment with score interpretation, practical exercises, and reflection questions to help parents and adult children separate what happened from what each person believes it meant and identify what needs to change in the relationship now.
